FAQ-aknowledgebase: Some Essential Tasks

No matter what, ALWAYS have up-to-date virus software on your computer (i.e. McAfee, Norton Antivirus). Update your .DAT files once a month. Warranties on most computers DO NOT cover viruses. Virus removal, if done by a shop will run £25/hr and varies on the amount of time needed to inoculate the system.

Spend the extra money and get a spike suppressor for your computer. This is just common sense. Your house has power surges all the time no matter where you live in this country. Thunderstorms can end the life of your computer in a heart beat and a UPS system can help to prevent that and prolong the life of your computer. A power surge that knocks your computer out is also not covered by warranties of most companies. They'll tell you after the fact that preventative maintenance is the best action, but then you'll be buying a new computer too. Do it right the first time.

Run Scandisk and Defrag at least once a month. Look at these programs as being physical fitness for your computer, it optimizes the files and where they are on your drive as well as repair errors that your drive may have acquired in that past month.

There are two folders on your computer that store files that are of little to no use, but do take up hard drive space. One is the "Temp" folder in the Windows directory, and the other one is "Temporary Internet Files", also located in the Windows directory. The Temp folder stored some files for convenience whenever you load a new program but fails to delete them afterwards using up disk space.

The Temporary Internet Files folder stores data and files from the internet each and every time you go to a webpage so that it will load faster when you return to it at a later date. The files in both of these folders are expendable.
